Mrs. DeNure’s Class Adopts a Bed

It’s exciting to see the staff and students at NKE starting to engage with the NKE Arboretum as the space becomes more usable! We need to thank school counselor (and Master Gardener) Sara Lubbers for coordinating the planting of the vegetable beds again. This year the fourth graders planted three of our current raised vegetable beds as part of their plant life cycle curriculum, and the remaining bed was “adopted” by Mrs. DeNure’s first-graders. Mrs. DeNure is “looping” up to teaching second grade with the same students in fall, so they’ll be able to see the fruits of their labor when they come back to school in September. This is what Mrs. DeNure had to say about their planting day in the Arboretum:

My first graders were VERY excited to get to “adopt” one of the raised beds out in the arboretum.  Sara Lubbers asked if we might be interested, and I jumped on the opportunity! I thought it would be a great idea, especially since I am looping with all of my kiddos up to 2nd grade next year, and we can continue to care for the garden. We headed outside, and the kids were happy to share their background knowledge about vegetables, how to plant them, and what they need to grow. Between all 21 of them, the kids dug holes, inserted the seed or plant, covered it with soil, and helped water everything that we planted, which included green and wax beans, onions, and one plant each of sweet potato, tomato, and basil! We plan to harvest the vegetables all together in the fall and work together to make something delicious to share with others at NKE!
